How to Calculate & Check Turnover for Equity Delivery and Intraday
How to calculate fno turnover
Turnover is relevant if you declare trading profits as business income. It helps determine whether a tax audit is applicable. If you classify trades as capital gains, turnover calculation is not required.
Equity Delivery Trades
- Definition: Shares are held for more than one day before selling.
- Turnover Rule: Only the sell value is considered turnover.
Example:
- Buy 100 Reliance @ ₹800 → Value ₹80,000
- Sell 100 Reliance @ ₹820 → Value ₹82,000
- Turnover = ₹82,000 (Sell value)
Intraday Equity Trades (Speculative)
- Definition: Buy and sell the same stock on the same day.
- Turnover Rule: Turnover = absolute profit + absolute loss from each trade.
Example 1 (Profit Trade):
- Buy 100 Reliance @ ₹800 → Sell @ ₹820
- Profit = ₹2,000 → Turnover = ₹2,000
Example 2 (Loss Trade):
- Buy 100 Reliance @ ₹820 → Sell @ ₹810
- Loss = ₹1,000 → Turnover = ₹1,000
? Annual turnover = Total of all absolute profits + losses across intraday trades.
